About The Position
Northern Geotechnical Engineering, Inc.–Terra Firma Testing (NGE-TFT) is seeking a qualified individual to lead its Construction Materials Engineering and Testing (CoMET) department.
NGE-TFT is based in Anchorage, Alaska and provides geotechnical engineering and CoMET services predominantly in Alaska, but with occasional out-of-state projects. We are a relatively small company, with six registered engineers, and approximately 20 CoMET staff, including laboratory technicians, field technicians, and ICC certified inspectors.
Our clientele is varied, ranging from individual homeowners, to large oil companies, to state and federal agencies. While we are based in Anchorage, most of our work (at this time) is spread across the remainder of the state.
The CoMET manager role will involve overseeing a team of inspection/testing and project management personnel, managing projects, and collaborating with clients to deliver CoMET services. The successful candidate will be responsible for bidding projects, ensuring high-quality service, and mentoring staff to enhance their skills and opportunities.
In addition, the role will also support marketing efforts and contribute to the growth and expansion of NGE-TFT’s services.
Responsibilities
- Serve as manager for CoMET projects, overseeing from start to finish.
- Prepare cost proposals for CoMET projects.
- Coordinate (and participate if required) in field observations and testing of construction materials.
- Manage assigned projects utilizing company resources.
- Support CoMET billing and collection activities.
- Direct and supervise daily operations of CoMET staff (between various projects), ensuring effective resource utilization and maximizing company profit.
- Provide mentorship and professional development to CoMET staff

Requirements
- 10 years of geotechnical and/or CoMET project management experience.
- 5 years of supervisory experience including managing professional and technical staff.
- 5 years of profit and loss management experience.
- Experience with laboratory accreditation (e.g. AASHTO re:source, etc.)
- Excellent written and communication skills
- Strong knowledge of construction materials
- Proficient in Microsoft environment
- Valid Alaska Driver License with clear record (or ability to get license upon arrival in Alaska)
- Ability to work legally in the U.S.
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited institution with 6 years of experience, or a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering with 4 years of experience.
- Preferred: NICET Engineering Technologist (CT) certification, or Professional Engineering license in Alaska (or ability to obtain within one year of hire).
